There are three main parts to this study. The first is an online test of your psi ability, which begins on the next page of this website. The second is another test of psi ability, which will be done live with another person over the telephone. These two tests will be used to determine eligibility for the third part of the study, the formal research to be conducted in person at sites in San Francisco and Palo Alto, CA

Your participation in this online portion and any future parts of this study is completely voluntary. You may withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or prejudice. We do not expect any physical or psychological risks as all you’ll be doing is answering a few questions about yourself and taking part in a series of brief, card guessing exercises. All identifying information and associated records will be kept strictly confidential through the use of identification codes and a secure database. Any written records will be stored in a locked file cabinet inside a secure office.

You will not be paid for your participation in the first two exercises. Possible benefits for taking part in these first exercises include receiving immediate feedback on the accuracy of your psychic impressions and contributing to the fields of psychic research and consciousness studies. If you complete the third part of the study, the formal research, you will be eligible to receive a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.com to help offset your time and travel costs.

The first part of this study, the online card guessing exercise, will take about 20-30 minutes total to complete. You will be shown a series of pictures as part of this exercise may produce a modest emotional response. None of the pictures will be highly stimulating or aggravating. These same pictures will be used in the second and third parts of the study.

After completing the first part of the study, you may be asked to participate in the second part. This will also take about 20-30 minutes at a time and place that is convenient for you. You and a researcher will talk over the telephone while you are on a computer connected to the internet. You will do another card guessing exercise much like the first one, and again you will receive immediate feedback on how well you did in the exercise.

Some people will then be asked to take part in the third part of the study. This part will be much more involved. You will be asked to attend an orientation session lasting 4 hours, during which you will meet the research team and other study participants, learn the complete study design, and get to see the study equipment. During the formal study, you will be asked to come in to the research laboratory maybe 5-7 times over the course of several months, with each visit lasting about 1½ hours. During these visits, you will do a series of card guessing exercises while seated inside a large, fabric tent that contains a desk, chair, some antennas, and lamps. The maximum total time commitment for this part of the study, excluding commuting, is estimated to be 16 hours, though the actual time requirements may be less.
